December is the perfect time to switch off and make the most of a few days rest before the Christmas festivities. Lanzarote, with its mild climate, unique volcanic landscapes and stunning coastline, becomes an ideal destination for enjoying outdoor plans, hiking routes, coastal tourism and peaceful beaches
Whether with family, as a couple or with friends, the island offers a wide range of experiences that allow you to make the most of every minute of the long weekend
Active tourism and nature
1. Discover Timanfaya National Park
Timanfaya National Park is unique in Spain for its geological value, formed by the volcanic eruptions that took place between 1720 and 1736, and in 1824. Its landscape, marked by the absence of vegetation, rugged reliefs, a diversity of colours and the silhouettes of volcanoes beside the coast, creates a setting of impressive natural beauty
Within the park are the famous Fire Mountains, an area where you can explore volcanic craters, admire landscapes that seem to belong to another planet and witness unique geothermal demonstrations thanks to the heat still preserved underground. This visit offers a complete perspective on Lanzarote’s volcanic origin and is perfect for those who enjoy nature and active tourism
2. Explore Cueva de los Verdes
Have you ever visited the inside of a volcanic tube? Cueva de los Verdes is a natural tube formed around 23,000 years ago by the eruption of the Corona Volcano. The guided tour lasts approximately one hour and surprises visitors with its mysterious underground route, featuring narrow spaces that are not difficult for most visitors
Along its route there are at least sixteen jameos, small natural cavities that open up within the tube. The more than six kilometres of gallery extend from the volcano’s crater down towards the sea, continuing into an underwater section of approximately one and a half kilometres, known as the “Tunnel of Atlantis”. It is a unique experience that combines geology, history and adventure
3. Jameos del Agua
Jameos del Agua is one of César Manrique’s most iconic interventions, designed to integrate art, architecture and nature within a unique volcanic setting. It is located right next to Cueva de los Verdes, as both form part of the same lava tunnel created by the eruption of the Corona Volcano
Its name comes from the inner lake formed by seawater seepage, where the blind albino crab (Munidopsis polymorpha), an endemic species of Lanzarote, lives. This ecosystem makes the space a place of great scientific and environmental value
In addition to its volcanic cavities and artistic design, Jameos del Agua is home to the House of the Volcanoes, a scientific outreach centre with interactive experiences, augmented reality and simulations that help visitors better understand the island’s volcanic activity. The complex also includes a natural auditorium built within the volcanic tube itself, a perfect example of how Manrique fused functionality and landscape
4. Hiking and volcanic routes
Lanzarote offers hiking routes for all levels:
• Route of the Volcanoes in Timanfaya: a guided route through craters and lava fields
• La Geria: walks among vineyards on volcanic soil, allowing you to combine nature and gastronomy with tastings of local wine
• Montaña Roja in Playa Blanca: a moderate climb with spectacular panoramic views of the south of the island, ideal at sunrise or sunset.
• Los Hervideros y Salinas de Janubio: coastal routes with cliffs and lava formations that open out onto the ocean.
5. Beaches and seafront walks.
The south of Lanzarote has peaceful golden-sand beaches that are perfect for walking or relaxing:
Papagayo Beach: coves with crystal-clear waters, ideal for enjoying the sun and sea.
• Playa Blanca y Playa Dorada: paseos largos frente al océano, perfectos para disfrutar del atardecer.
• Paseo LASAL: walking along this seafront promenade allows you to combine sea views with the ocean breeze and tranquillity, especially in December
6. Cultural tourism and museums.
Although the main focus may be nature and adventure, you can also discover the local history and culture:
• Museo Atlántico de Lanzarote: underwater art 15 metres below the surface, surrounded by marine life.
César Manrique Foundation and San José Castle: examples of art and architecture integrated with the volcanic landscape.
Outdoor activities
For those travelling with family or friends:
• Catamaran excursions or boat trips along the coast
• Snorkelling, paddleboarding and water sports on sheltered beaches
• Cycling routes or bicycle hire to explore the coast
